Too many “informed” scenes and paragraphs give this book a non-fictional feel that I’m not sure the author was trying for or not. Yet, an overly dry and clinical feel to the book pull it down.
Good storytelling, excellent research, and a balance of numerous features make this book enjoyable to a degree. However, the overall tone of the novel was dry and harsh, making me not care as much for the characters and their struggles as I might have felt given another format. In a format like this, I would expect something of this nature. There are multiple examples of told scenes and paragraph after paragraph just giving the reader bundles of information to digest, including dates and ultimate fates of people mid-story. The balance in this novel, however, was way off. I’ve seen the device of utilizing the non-fiction format to tell a fictional story, and I’ve seen it done well. Yet, for all that good stuff, the novel had a very clinical feel to it. The balance act between all these elements was, for the most part, handled deftly and well. The book engages the reader by utilizing multiple features: a murder/mystery, multiple survival stories, and different characterizations illustrating how people acted under the Nazis. Brutally honest in its portrayal of daily life under the German regime and the fate of Resistance fights captured by the Nazis, the writer doesn’t shy away from the horrors and tragedy. The idea behind the story and the research are a plus in this book’s favor.
This book was enjoyable, but I felt like there was a huge issue that didn’t work that well. I think I might be in the minority on my thoughts for this book it seems like most other reviewers are giving it five stars and lush reviews.
